Gaijin Eyes is a multidisciplinary project bringing together the crafts of several creatives to present a book, an accompanying movie and a limited 1-of-1 capsule collection in collaboration with Obey Clothing. The Japanese word Gaijin translates to Foreigner or Outsider, with the exact translation being Alien. The eyes of an outsider show us a different perspective on Japan. A very personal, yet relatable sight. Gaijin Eyes is an introverted experience of an observer, us, witnessing and diving into the unfamiliar surroundings, being influenced by all the fleeting moments of stranger’s lives without directly taking part in it. Vincenz Gertoberens (born in 1994) has been making a name for himself – not only in Berlin’s fashion and art scene – but also internationally through a network of like-minded creatives from different parts of the world.Last year he first combined his powers with Obey Clothing by being one of the creatives behind the Obey x Healing Tales collab.This time Vincenz teamed up with Kiril Nagy (text, design and creative direction – @kirilschocolate), Olivia Waligóra (film editing – @lilemi2_), SMRL (sound design and music – @__smlr), Jonas Wolff (logo design – @jwwwolff) and Janice Esguerra (text editing – @mediumlondonfog).  For the release event of Gaijin Eyes, Berlin’s scene pulled up to witness all three layers of this project. Flipping through the pages of the book, directly diving into the images and literary text, watching the short movie, squeezed together in the gallery space, staring at the lights of Tokyo on the white walls,  and browsing through the unique longsleeves while meeting new people and chatting with the creators of this special project. On May 25th, OBEY organized a party at Les Vivres de l'Art in Bordeaux. We we’re joined by an impressive lineup of artists, including the talented rapper Romsii and his dj Sauvageon, the renowned rapper Rad Cartier, and the skilled dj, Urumi. Les Vivres de l'Art provided the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary event, with its industrial ambiance and immersive environment adding to the overall experience. The party was a testament to the vibrant music and art scene in Bordeaux, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. 

On May 12th was the opening party for Kurashi x Daan Koens at the OBEY Art Space in Amsterdam. It was a great evening full of art, culture and music. Kurashi started as a clothing brand inspired by artists such as Shepard Fairey and Parra, and has expanded into a collective exploring various mediums for art and self-expression. Kurashi’s most recent collaboration is with Daan Koens, a self-taught Rotterdam-based artist who is already becoming a well-established name in the new generation of Dutch/Caribbean artists. Koens draws inspiration from the tropical landscapes of his childhood home in Curaçao. Over time, he has cultivated a unique style ranging from realistic self-portraits to cubist impressions.  Music and the exploration of sound is one of the integral parts of the Kurashi Collective. The musical chapter, Kurashi Soundsystem, was born during their very first event. Their selectors travel through a broad spectrum of sounds, ranging from Bubbling, Baile Funk, Jungle, Dembow, Reggae, to Hip-Hop. Kurashi translates to courage in Papiamentu, the language of the ABC-islands. For the Kurashi Collective the word is about being courageous and outspoken about one’s identity. For more info check Kurashi Collective and Daan Koens Pictures by Lex van der MolenVideo by Amaar Landbrug

   

On March 25th, Obey Art Space Berlin hosted the opening for GHOSTS, the newest exhibition by Berlin-based artist Mona Sardari. Sardari is a German illustrator, born in 1992, she has been practicing art most of her life.After graduating from Freie Kunstwerkstatt Munich, she studied communication design and went on to teach illustration at the IFOG Academy Munich as a lecturer before moving to Berlin in 2021. Throughout her career, she has worked with the likes of Adidas for their Girls are Awesome project, Dimanche London, Form of Interest, Tint Store and SHRN. The works featured in GHOSTS deal with the artist’s years of suffering from insomnia. Her black and white illustrations invite the onlooker into the feeling of sleeplessness and the moments of awakening in the middle of the night. This exploration into the hypnagogic state, experienced as the foggy realm between wakefulness and sleep, is the main inspiration of her designs. From the beginning, Berlin-based designer Judith Bondy has placed great value on the exchange and cooperation with other artists in order to develop joint collection parts. Through these collaborations, new inspirations flow into the design language and the creative process and are subject to constant change. In the current METANOIA collection, which she presented in September 2022 as part of Berlin Fashion Week, she worked together with the digital artist 11v151131_m06.Since 2012 11v151131_m06's research has focused on computer-generated images. 11v151131_M06 has collaborated with artists such as Pauline Oliveros, John Zorn, Yoshida Tatsuya and William Winant. He is currently researching concepts surrounding ancient futurism and the occult using artificial intelligence technology. His dark aesthetics and interest in fashion can be found in BONDY's collections, making him the ideal collaboration partner.BONDY stands for unique fashion with no limits. First published in 2021, the Berlin-based magazine attracted a loyal readership in cities all over the world. A few weeks ago, we enjoyed an afternoon and evening full of great fights, amazing bands, and awesome DJ’s with our friends from Boogieland.We love Boogieland! They are an incredible boxing club in Amsterdam North that opens the doors to the fascinating world of real kickboxing and boxing, while creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all  who are interested. Boogieland creates a great atmosphere while providing challenging training for their fighters.All of the fights were full of fire and passion and professionally supervised. The event was a great time for everyone, and the fighters were welcomed like superstars.In the evening, the party erupted with bands like Bong Lord, Wodan Boys and excellent songs mixed by Mr. Wix, among others. We at OBEY contributed to this event by sponsoring Boogieland tees.  On the 8th of October, OBEY and Wallstreet threw a party and best trick contest at Bow Down Studio in Biarritz to celebrate their collaboration with the well-known French skateshop, Wallstreet. A range of music artists from various genres were invited to play. The lineup included Double Cheese (garage) and Romsii x Sauvageon(rap) as well as our Biarritz based DJ's Dpraya and VX2Neil.  WALLSTREET and OBEY came together to create a capsule collection with the French artist Mouts, who designed special artworks on each garment. The capsule included a t-shirt, a hoodie, pants and a skateboard. Wallstreet Skateshop was founded in 1998 and is one of the finest skate shops in Europe. Philipp GladsomeBorn and raised in Chemnitz; now living in Berlin; photographer Philipp Gladsome started his artistic career over ten years ago. He combined his enthusiasm for analog photography with his passion for music to document not only the national, but international music and fashion scene ever since. For Holiday ’22 Philipp did the shooting for OBEY’s Shepard Fairey Collection at the OBEY ART SPACE Berlin. @philipp_gladsomewww.gladsome.de 

We were super excited to work on a collaborative shirt to support the tour. We worked with Anaiah from Zulu and artist Nina Buxenbaum to create something special. Here’s what Nina had to say about her work. “We view the Baobab tree as a connection to our African ancestors, healing our relationship to nature and agriculture as a path towards healing our ancestral trauma. The flowers are from the African yam plant and the  American sweet potato plants. These plants are a staple of African and African American cultural cuisine. Plants are our medicine, and learning to grow food in a sustainable way, meeting the needs of our Mother Earth, will lead us to healing and self-efficacy.“ Make sure to support Zulu on tour in your town soon and if you missed the recent shows, we have a few shirts for sale on our site while supplies last.
