Mark McGowan discovered Shepard Fairey’s work 20 years ago when he first moved from England to America. He was hit with unexpected culture shock seeing the logical contradictions embedded in American culture, including the widespread use of religion to promote guns and the death penalty, while simultaneously opposing social policies like free healthcare. While trying to reconcile with this cognitive dissonance, Mark resonated with Shepard Fairey’s work, which boldly acknowledged and questioned these contradictions. It struck such a chord that he was inspired to immortalize the art on his body and wear it proudly on his sleeve.

Last week was an exciting one in Berlin. On Thursday, Shepard Fairey opened his exhibition “Photo Synthesis” at Fotografiska. The show traces his creative journey, from early wheat-paste street pieces and screen printing to digital collage and new works made specifically for this exhibition. It highlights how photography has continually inspired and shaped his artistic evolution, bringing together defining works alongside new creations that continue to transform cityscapes.The evening began with a performance by Berlin-based garage duo Cava, followed by a Q&A with Shepard Fairey hosted by Lodown Magazine’s editor-in-chief, and longtime friend, Sven Fortmann. After exploring the impressive Fotografiska building and the exhibition itself, the night closed with a DJ set by Shepard Fairey.With a mild hangover but high spirits, we gathered again the next evening at the OBEY Art Space to celebrate a 30-year friendship between Shepard Fairey’s OBEY and Thomas Marecki’s Lodown. Their shared roots in skate, surf, and street culture, a mix of activism, DIY creativity, and freedom, shaped a generation and continue to inspire today. From Cold War West Berlin to 1990s Southern California, their work has always carried a restless urge to disrupt and connect.“Today, those signals are fractured. The Pax Americana has crumbled, elites have failed, and trust has decayed.
 A reset is no longer optional. For Holiday 25, we worked with James Winstanley. Originally from the Peak District and now based in London, James is a creative blending analogue, digital, and experimental techniques. “The tone for OBEY Winter 2025 was set by the summer campaign I shot earlier in the year, something fun, slightly offbeat, and a little otherworldly. The brief was interpreted as a “festive but not Christmassy get-together amongst friends”, a sort of non-religious, non-time-specific celebration filled with warmth, comfort, and questionable party snacks (pineapple covered in cheese and cherries, anyone?)Shot in my house over a sunny day, we blacked out the windows until nobody quite knew what time it was. That discombobulated, homely feeling became the mood of the whole campaign. Cosy, familiar, yet just off enough to feel surreal.Repetition was key again: the same faces appearing in different roles, because everyone knows you can’t have a non-religious, non-time-specific celebration with just two people. By the end of it, the house reeked of a half-eaten cheese plate and a faint whiff of accomplishment. A playful mix of unease, warmth, and celebration… that’s the space I like to sit in. This past Friday, we celebrated the opening of “Middle Distance”, an exhibition by Ryan Hawaii. Much love to everyone who came through.This body of work explores Hawaii’s ongoing engagement with spiritual themes. A central motif is the eye, an allegory for life itself: the centre symbolising existence, while the chambers on either side embody “before life” and “afterlife.” Life, suspended between these two realms, becomes the “middle distance”, a space filled with its rich spectrum of experiences, both positive and negative.Another key theme is the transcendence of place. Through paintings and drawings, Hawaii takes viewers on a journey across physical and mental landscapes, transporting from Cuba to Morocco to London, and into the surrealist territories of his dreams. These subconscious spaces form yet another “middle distance,” bridging reality and abstraction.The exhibition reflects Hawaii’s long-standing connection to Amsterdam, which is also a “middle distance” between London and the Rhode Island streets were OBEY was born. The show serves as a the platform for Hawaii’s meeting of the minds with legendary founder Shepard Fairey.The exhibition runs until 31st October. Why would I want to collaborate on an exhibition with Invader and Damien Hirst? I’ve long respected both artists because they are intelligent, conceptual, and relentless in their singular creative visions. “Obsessive” might be too mild a description to convey their drive, focus, and prodigious output. I can relate to them. I also admire risk-takers and troublemakers who can withstand condescending, impolite jabs from supposedly polite society. Those qualities inspired me to collaborate with them even though our aesthetics have no natural overlap or compatibility. A clash of styles in collaboration is a risk worth taking, and creativity can solve almost all problems. Malcolm McLaren once told me, “A glorious failure is better than a boring success.” So, with that as a guiding principle, what could possibly go wrong? – ShepardNewport Street Gallery, in association with HENI, presents Triple Trouble, an exhibition uniting three disruptive artists: Shepard Fairey, Damien Hirst, and Invader. Opening October 10th, this unprecedented show, curated by Connor Hirst, will feature a dynamic mix of individual works alongside bold new collaborations, many of which will be revealed to the public for the very first time.Join us for the opening event on Thursday, October 9th from 6pm – 8pm at Newport Street Gallery. Ryan Hawaii is a multidisciplinary artist from Catford, South East London, known for his work in fashion, visual art, and music. His work is defined by bold, hand-painted designs that blend punk aesthetics with personal and spiritual narratives.He began by customizing T-shirts for performances with his music collective Neverland Clan, which quickly evolved into a wider practice of fashion design, painting, and music production. His clothing pieces are often one-of-a-kind, featuring expressive illustrations and text that challenge societal norms and encourage self-expression.  His garments are often created bespoke for the wearer & some notable collaborators include Kanye West, Skepta, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Gorillaz, Goldlink, Poppy Ajudah, Lancey, Ray Fuego & Virgil Abloh amongst others. For Ryan, garments are not simply fashion items but wearable artworks, with the wearer completing the piece by bringing it into the world. His cross-disciplinary approach continues to push boundaries, staying true to his DIY ethos that connects with a broad and diverse community.This spirit made a collaboration with OBEY a natural fit. Ryan will present a solo exhibition at the OBEY Art Space in Amsterdam, where he will showcase both fine art and one-of-a-kind OBEY pieces, including exclusive screen-printed tees available only at the Amsterdam flagship store. Ginger Boy is a proud Coachella Valley native who grew up repping OBEY. His windmill tattoo pays tribute to the “Power Up Windmill” t-shirt he got in 7th grade, featuring artwork from Shepard Fairey’s 2009 “Clean Energy for America.” Seeing a brand as iconic as OBEY celebrate his hometown’s beauty and its iconic windmills left a lasting impression — and inspired him to make the image permanent.Filmed by @spaceboyuno

Last year when I met the crew at OBEY and we had our first meeting about me doing a campaign for Fall 2025, Delivery 2. The main question was, what do you want to shoot? The idea of being free and open to create is the most empowering feeling. We decided to hit the road and explore California blindly and that's what we roped ourselves into again. It's is all new clothes, models, locations and feeling but one thing stayed constant and that was the amazing crew that helped put this together. We’ve had the privilege of working with Cristian Bravo before and his perspective always brings something unexpected. This campaign follows his return to the desert, where past and present come into focus through the lens of his camera.“In 2010 the idea of living inside of the films i grew up watching remained inaccessible behind the glass of my tv screen. A screen similar to the one of my first ever camera, who at the time was just part of my cellphone, completely invisible to me until the second I landed in Las Vegas with my father, at 18 years of age. That was my first time flying internationally over the Pacific Ocean, something I’d never imagine possible outside of a dream. 15 years later I return to Las Vegas through the desert with Andrey, Rob, India, and Ron in March 2025 to continue this photographic exploration. We’re opening our doors at OBEY Art Space Berlin for ‘TRUE FEELINGS’, a group photo exhibition.   Art is a reflection of the human experience, shaped by memory, influence, and emotion.   For most artists, this emotional landscape becomes the foundation of their creative process. With this project, we aim to uncover the emotional layer behind the work and to understand how inner feelings are transformed into visual expression. Through their lens, we not only explore artistic process, but gain deeper insight into what it means to be human.   Introducing the artists:  Sarah Zak worked as a professional hair and make-up artist, where she helped shape the polished, idealized images demanded by brands and media; beautiful, but often artificial, and ultimately in service of selling products. Over time, she realized her true desire was not to create beauty, but to show the kind of beauty that already exists. “I wanted to share my creativity freely,” Sarah explains. “Not just follow instructions, but capture beauty in an unfiltered way. That’s when I picked up an analog camera.” She began photographing the women around her; agency models, long-time friends, and even strangers she met on the street. Always with the same goal: to create a space where they could feel safe, comfortable, and seen as their true selves. Shot entirely on 35mm film, Sarah’s work is a celebration of realness and raw emotion. Her portraits are an ode to imperfection, filled with natural encounters and honest expressions. There’s no heavy editing, no forced posing, just a vibrant, fine art photography style that feels both personal and powerful. In a world dominated by filtered feeds and performative perfection, Sarah Zak’s images offer something rare: a visual relief.  Hannes Gade began his creative journey in design, later working as an art director in the fashion industry.  But over time, he felt the need to channel his eye for aesthetics and composition in a more personal, artistic direction which lead him to photography. Today, his work spans fashion, portraiture, and editorial, marked by a distinctive and refined visual style. Hannes’ visual language is clear and deliberate, often carrying a quiet intensity. Inspired in part by the structure and symbolism of ancient Greece, his compositions reflect a sense of formality and timelessness, whether for editorial commissions or personal artistic projects. What sets him apart is his ability to create authentic, intimate staging through close collaboration with his models. His photographs don’t just present people, they evoke connection.  Miriam Marlene is a Berlin-born photographer who conjures a visual world where fantasy and reality seamlessly intertwine. Her captivating images glow with a hazy, nostalgic glamour, drawing the viewer into a space shaped more by imagination than by lived experience.  Rather than documenting reality, Miriam builds her narratives from dreamlike fragments, where distorted fairytales, mythic elements, and surreal moods come together to form a rich, cinematic atmosphere. Her work evokes intimacy, sisterhood, unspoken bonds, and ritual, offering a glimpse into a world both mysterious and deeply personal.   Daan Dam does photography at its purest, capturing real connections, confronting situations and society's imperfections in cities, mostly Berlin- the city he is based in- and everywhere his travels take him.  What began on blurry nights out; using photography to piece together memories, has since evolved into his main mode of expression. A key strength of Daan’s work lies in his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether it’s a chance encounter on the street or a studio shoot with a prominent cultural figure, his images are always grounded in authentic interaction. His personal work explores themes such as social inequality, inclusivity, and human vulnerability, yet his photos can be straight-up funny. What’s going on in our backyard in LA and around the country with the ICE raids has been incredibly tough to see. The villainization of immigrants and uprooting of our communities has been devastating to our friends, families, and neighbors.
  We were approached by our good friend Francisco Reyes Jr. (@nevermade) with a graphic that seemed to visually and ideologically hit home for us. Cisco wanted to get the graphic out there and we were happy to support the cause.
