Obey Womens Artist Series: Cloudy Rhodes
Obey Womens teamed up with Cloudy Rhodes, a preternaturally gifted photographer, artist, surfer and babe who seamlessly dances between the crystal clear waters of Byron Beach, Australia, and the grimy streets of New York and LA. As one of Australia’s most exciting new artists, Cloudy has been profiled by Monster Children Magazine as one of the country’s top young photographers to watch. Her photographs are hauntingly beautiful, with elements of nature juxtaposed with urban grit. She celebrates female form and challenges the language that exists between the ideas of sexuality and feminism.
Our very own women’s designer, Grace Lee got a chance to wrap with Cloudy about her inspirations, photography, and lifestyle. Check out her interview below
WHAT OR WHO INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST ON YOUR PATH TO PHOTOGRAPHY?
I like images that tell stories so I take a lot of my influence from film.
YOU ARE AN AMAZING SURFER, HOW DOES YOUR STYLE ON THE WATER TRANSLATE TO YOUR STYLE ON THE STREET?
Surfing for me is all about style, and working with the rhythm of the wave drawing beautiful lines, my surfing is very relaxed. I guess my style on the street is very similar in that way.
SPEAKING OF STREET STYLE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN TERMS OF FASHION?
My aesthetic has always been clean and simple. My style in terms of fashion is the same with a bit of a surf and skating influence.
WHEN WE CHATTED LAST YOU MENTIONED WERE CONSIDERING COMING OUT HERE TO THE STATES, WHERE ARE YOU HEADED?
I would love to be based in NY. I feel so inspired when I’m there. I think people are always what inspire me the most.
WHAT WERE YOU INSPIRED BY TO CREATE YOUR PHOTO COLLAGES FOR THIS ARTIST SERIES?
I am always super inspired by colours, I am obsessed with pale blue and pink at the moment so I wanted to incorporate them into the works. I also really wanted to combine abstract forms with old surf and skate imagery to create the artworks.
