  • HARMONY & DISCORD X PACE PRINTS NYC

    Shepard Fairey:  Harmony & Discord
    Opening: Saturday, May 5, 12-8pm
    May 5 – June 16, 2012
    Pace Prints, NYC

Pace Prints is pleased to present Harmony & Discord, an exhibition of new works by Shepard Fairey, created in the Pace Editions studios in New York. This is Shepard’s first exhibition with Pace Prints and premiers his first works in handmade paper as well as the largest screenprints he has done to date.

Harmony & Discord references the global dichotomy of politics; what forces it creates on the grand scale and how that reflects on the actions and awareness of the individual. Responding to the energy of New York, Fairey worked on this technically complex body of work in a series of sessions at the Pace Editions studios. During this residency he also went out on the streets and made a number of large murals.

On view will be a number of silkscreens done with collage and spraypaint, as well as handmade paper, embossment and relief prints, and large metal plates with screenprint. Though Shepard approached the work in the same way that he does in his studio, Pace Editions provided the opportunity to scale the work to a larger size. Relating to the surfaces of his street work, the hand painted multiple (HPM) works in this series have backgrounds of stenciled pulp, collage, screenprint and embossment, allowing the image to pop off of its vintage, layered surface. This exhibition also marks the first time Fairey presents metal relief plates as art pieces, layered with silkscreen, furthering spatial extent within the work.

Subjects in the exhibition include Fairey’s Imperial Glory and Power images, both of which pay homage to Lichtenstein’s style while referencing issues of the military industrial complex. Also on view will be The Reagan and Friends series, depicting politicians and corporate bosses as manipulative salesmen. A more graphic grouping of works, which all utilize the target as a device, examines symbols, stereotypes and propaganda. Topics include war and peace, political corruption, global warming, and personal empowerment and responsibility.

  • SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS X STANLEY DONWOOD

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce Lost Angeles, a solo exhibition of art by British artistStanley Donwood.

    LOST ANGELES

    Work by Stanley Donwood

    April 28 – May 26, 2012

    Opening Reception: Saturday, April 28th • 8PM – 10 PM

There is no future. We have evicted ourselves from our own cities, rendered our agriculture poisonous, criminalized the poor, aggrandized the rich, honored the stupid and ridiculed the intelligent…I have no solutions, no wisdom to offer…Whilst Rome burns, I take up my little chisel and I carve a panoramic apocalypse of my own…and if you want to see it, you’re more than welcome.     – Stanley Donwood, 2012

Lost Angeles will feature a new body of work where Donwood turns his poignant perception on the impact of current societal trends and behavior towards Los Angeles. His visual meditation on society envelopes viewers in a beautifully, graphic landscape of impending doom. The fluid black and white scene resonates with honesty and forewarning. True to form, Donwood once again succeeds in giving flawless design to his version of our tragically flawed future.

On display will be an 18-foot apocalyptic panorama of the City of Angels being destroyed by fire, flood and meteor storm. Originally carved into 18 separate panels of linoleum then hand burnished onto Japanese Kozo paper, the never-before-seen, limited edition print was inspired by subject matter similar to Donwood’s 2006 work titled London Views.

Donwood began London Views in 2004 after being shaken by the Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed more than 229,000 lives. His original drawings evolved from being visual recordings of the destruction into ruminations on the environmental repercussions of contemporary lifestyle. Inspired by the aesthetics of the woodcut illustrations in the 15th century publication Nuremberg Chronicle, Donwood carved scenes from his drawings into a 10 foot-long linoleum panorama. This visual narrative of London being consumed by natural disaster was then laboriously transferred onto rolls of Kozo Washi-a durable, fibrous paper first developed in Japan over 1,300 years ago.

Selections from the Lost Angeles series (2012) will be accompanied by the London Views (2006) print and a small linocut titled Fleet Street Apocalypse (2008), all connected by a similar theme. Individual relief prints from the original linocuts, a selection of limited edition screen prints, several books by Donwood, and jigsaw puzzles of scenes from Lost Angeles will also be on view.

Whether presented in the form of prints, paintings, or publications, the biting wit of Donwood’s observations is present and impeccably executed.

Stanley Donwood gained recognition in 1994 when he began designing album art for the Grammy-award winning English rock band, Radiohead. His work has since been used for 15 singles, 9 EPs and various studio albums including The Bends, Kid A, OK Computer, and Hail to the Thief. In addition to his work with Radiohead, Donwood has successfully exhibited paintings, etchings, linoprints and screenprints across Europe, Asia and the US. He has published 5 of his own monographs, created a record label (Six Inch Records) and designed all official artwork for the Glastonbury Festival since 2002. Donwood currently lives and works in Essex, England.

  • 5 DAYS OFF

A few weeks ago was the 5 Days Off festival in Amsterdam, an electronic music and art festival. Some friends were playing, so of course I had to check it out.

Thursday night's line-up at Paradiso was the best. Kutmah, Hudson Mohawke and the Gaslamp Killer were supposed to play, along side of some good Dutch names, James Zoo and Krampfhaft. Unfortunately Hudson Mohawke had to cancel last minute, luckily the gap was filled by Lunice.

    Kutmah's set was awesome.

The Gaslamp Killer said multiple times that night that Kutmah is his favorite DJ.

Luckily for all of you who weren't there you can find Kutmah's set from 5 Days Off here: CLICK

And then there was the motherfucking Gaslamp Killer. I don't know how it is everywhere else in the world, but here in Amsterdam they love this fucking guy. Luckily he loves Amsterdam too, so we see plenty of him.

Besides the main room my friends from Red Light Radio were broadcasting live from Paradiso's basement which was good as always.

If you wanna get a somewhat more professional view on the night, the guys from Los Bangeles wrote a pretty nice review about it. Check it out here.

  • Eskuche for all!

I love Thursdays, especially when we get deliveries like we did today. The fine folks at Eskuche sent us over a box of headphones for people around the office. I already use Eskuche headphones when I DJ, they have good style, good design and most importantly they sound good. Thank you Andy, the stuff looks great!

These are nice to DJ with.

Digging on these gold flake ones, they look like they go fast.

    Good for the OGers!

  • Welcome to Austin, Please don't move here.

Well, after catching up on about a week's worth of sleep I feel more human again and less hobo (even though that line was very much blurred in Austin, where the bums looked like Brooklyn hipsters). Anyways, I am back on track and ready to tell you about my SXSW adventures in one of the weirdest cities I have ever been to, Austin, Texas.

We arrived last Tuesday and began our day with coffee and tacos which turned out to become a daily ritual for the week. We did a lot of walking and dancing and saw a ton of good shows, ran into some old friends and made some really cool new ones.

This is our little travel group on day 1 with me on the far right. I have a talent for talking to people while they are taking pictures I am in.

Of course I hung out with CMRTYZ who sold their awesome shirts and threw some wild parties

    Pretty sweet eh?

Portals. We ate A LOT of hot dogs.

and also, this. When in Texas...

This is us sitting on the curb outside Spin, thinking about why we weren't cool enough to get into the Fiona Apple show.

One of us got a free tattoo at the Sailor Jerry's trailer with the band members of The Growlers (don't worry Alex, I won't say who)

Dana Dynamite, one of the coolest chick i know. She helped me throw my OBEY artist collab launch party in NY last fall

For a minute we were teleported back to the 80's when our friend showed up with this bumble bee. Yes, that happened.

I also noticed a bit of a shirt an hat trend down there!

And then I met this kid, whose name is OBEY.

This is it for now, will be back soon.

    Kthanksbye
