  • THIS IS THE CROSBY

If you've only been to The Crosby (Santa Ana, CA) for an occasional late night soiree you probably don't know about the ever-changing menu that Aron the chef and the hoodlums in the kitchen have been working on.  In the words of Iron Lung.. They be cookin up some marvelous shit to get your mouth watering on some "Ohh Shit!"

I could spend all day talking about what's in this stuff and how the flavors will treat you better than your high-school sweetheart.. But who really cares about my opinion.  You just have to go in for dinner and try it yourself.

For their 4 year anniversary they revamped www.thisisthecrosby.com. Check it out. Watch some videos, look at some pictures, get hungry, and drive over to 400 N. Broadway, Santana Guey.

  • HARMONY & DISCORD X PACE PRINTS NYC

    Shepard Fairey:  Harmony & Discord
    Opening: Saturday, May 5, 12-8pm
    May 5 – June 16, 2012
    Pace Prints, NYC

Pace Prints is pleased to present Harmony & Discord, an exhibition of new works by Shepard Fairey, created in the Pace Editions studios in New York. This is Shepard’s first exhibition with Pace Prints and premiers his first works in handmade paper as well as the largest screenprints he has done to date.

Harmony & Discord references the global dichotomy of politics; what forces it creates on the grand scale and how that reflects on the actions and awareness of the individual. Responding to the energy of New York, Fairey worked on this technically complex body of work in a series of sessions at the Pace Editions studios. During this residency he also went out on the streets and made a number of large murals.

On view will be a number of silkscreens done with collage and spraypaint, as well as handmade paper, embossment and relief prints, and large metal plates with screenprint. Though Shepard approached the work in the same way that he does in his studio, Pace Editions provided the opportunity to scale the work to a larger size. Relating to the surfaces of his street work, the hand painted multiple (HPM) works in this series have backgrounds of stenciled pulp, collage, screenprint and embossment, allowing the image to pop off of its vintage, layered surface. This exhibition also marks the first time Fairey presents metal relief plates as art pieces, layered with silkscreen, furthering spatial extent within the work.

Subjects in the exhibition include Fairey’s Imperial Glory and Power images, both of which pay homage to Lichtenstein’s style while referencing issues of the military industrial complex. Also on view will be The Reagan and Friends series, depicting politicians and corporate bosses as manipulative salesmen. A more graphic grouping of works, which all utilize the target as a device, examines symbols, stereotypes and propaganda. Topics include war and peace, political corruption, global warming, and personal empowerment and responsibility.

  • Shepard on The Simpsons

On March 4, 2012, Shepard will guest star on the 23rd Season of the iconic television series, The Simpsons.  Episode 15 – “Exit Though The Kwik-E-Mart”, In order to get back at his dad, Bart goes undercover as a graffiti street artist and plasters Homer’s unflattering image all over Springfield. But one night, Bart and Milhouse get caught in the act by established street artists Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal (guest voicing as themselves), and to Bart’s surprise, they invite him to exhibit his satirical artwork in his very own gallery show. Meanwhile, a hip, new health food superstore opens in Springfield that threatens to put Apu and the Kwik-E-Mart out of business.

“Part of being on ‘The Simpsons,’ is you’re being honored as a reference point in culture,” Fairey says. “But you also can’t be too sensitive about that part of culture being made fun of…There’s irony that comes with something outsider becoming insider. And they do a great job of examining that.” -Shepard

"The Simpsons has been one of my favorite shows since the early 90′s. When I was running my screen printing studio in Providence R.I. my crew and I lead a Spartan existence consisting of long hours and a seven day work week. Our only recreational indulgence ritual was to stop work early Sunday evenings to eat dinner together while watching the Simpsons. I’ve always loved the Simpsons blend of humor and social commentary, so it is a huge honor for me to appear as a guest character on the March 4th episode. The story line is great, and they were kind enough to indulge a couple of my dialogue suggestions designed to make the social commentary more pointed(even though I had to make fun of myself to do so). I can’t wait to see it!" -Shepard

  • LOVE ME

"In November, 2011 Steve T. and I took a short trip to NYC to catch up with Curtis Kulig, the man behind the infamous Love Me tag. We were lucky enough to shadow Curtis and have an inside look at his art, home and studio. Curtis is one of the nicest people you can meet and while traveling through his neighborhood you get the feeling we aren't the only one's who think that." - Jon Furlong

  • Shepard Fairey x Incase

"I was very excited to do an artist series with the Incase brand because beyond just digging their products, I have a great history of creative projects with Incase partner and Creative Director, Damon Way. It has been a pleasure to work with Damon and the entire Incase team in developing the series.

"The artworks that comprise my series for Incase all overtly or sublimely reflect the concept of Peace. Peace seems like a simple idea, but evidence of its fragility is far too visible. I believe peace, beauty, and harmony are not only related, but intertwined. Visual symbols of peace manifest similarly in many different cultures, transcending language and reminding us of the basic loves and needs we all have in common. Peace is a struggle, but whether the images are ornamental, hopeful, or cautionary, this series promotes harmony." - Shepard

  • OBEY AWARENESS: URBAN ROOTS

We just launched our new OBEY Awareness project with Urban Roots. We are raising funds in support of a call to action that creates farms within schools in urban areas. These farms are used not only to grow food but to educate as well. Since funding for this type of project was not previously available, Tree Media Foundation partnered with the Green Schoolhouse- a Los Angeles-based school garden consulting and design company. Together they created a pilot program to build school farms called “Field of Dreams”. The Field of Dreams farms function as an outdoor classroom where high school students learn the sustainable practices of planting, composting and water conservation to grow food with the highest organic and nutritional value. Each school will experience the growth cycle from seed, to harvest, to table. The goal of the project is for students to bring home the message that growing your own food is a simple and vital process.

By purchasing this item you are directly supporting the OBEY AWARENESS program. We launched OBEY AWARENESS to educate the posse and generate funding for causes that we are involved in. OBEY AWARENESS is unique in that it will constantly evolve to support emerging, important issues. All profits generated from the sale of the Obey product completely support these causes. We encourage you to check out the upcoming new styles, stay involved, learn more and make a difference. Stay up!

  • Gaslight Anthem & The Boss in Asbury

Following up from his coverage of "REVOLUTIONS: The Album Cover Art of Shepard Fairey," Lobo Jones (aka my brother, Eric Van't Zelfden) strikes again capturing a very "Jersey" evening with none other than "The Boss!"

Last weekend Lobo hit Asbury Park, NJ to shoot "The Gaslight Anthem," a band that is not only a personal favorite of mine but  that is also gaining momentum as the punk rock band with blue collar roots and Springsteen-esque soul.

So you could imagine what a treat it was for Asbury locals to have Bruce Springsteen himself take the stage with the Gaslight boys for an all out jam of Gaslight's song "American Slang."
For those that couldn't be there, myself included :( , here are some shots of the evening. Be sure to check out more photos at LOBO JONES PHOTOGRAPHY or feel free to shoot an e-mail over to lobojonesphoto@gmail.com

And don't forget to check out THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM and pick up their newest album "American Slang."

"Great post, definitely feeling that... hmm.. uhh... so the sale is when?" or "Hey Guys, really love the brand... would love you even more if I knew the date of the sale." or "Sorry I was out doing good deeds in the world, missed your post...
