  • Psych Out

Our friend (and future artist series artist) Carlos is involved in a sort of gallery opening/record shop/pop-up shop in NY that opens tomorrow in Brooklyn. Carlos and his friends are on some next level stuff. Go check the shop/gallery out if you're in New York. We made them some shirts based on the flyer art done by Carlos. They are only available at the Psychedelic Summer/RARE Gallery exhibit starting tomorrow. Next Tuesday we will be releasing a small run of the T's on shop.obeyclothing.com as well.

    PSYCHEDELIC SUMMER
    Art Show & Record Shop
    Curated by CMRTYZ

    June 24 - July 24

    -------------------------
    OPENING PARTY
    ! This Thursday !
    June 24, 6-9 PM
    Featuring Performances by
    The Beets & The Babies
    --------------------------

    RARE Gallery
    547 W 27 Street | No. 514
    New York New York 10001

RARE Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition and independent record shop curated by Seattle-based collaborative studio CMRTYZ.  Including original artwork by John Malta, C.M. Ruiz, Cassie Ramone, and Matthew Volz, Psychedelic Summerpromises to be this season's weirdest happening.  Stocked with vinyl, limited editions, and assorted lo-fi merch by Bachelor, Captured Tracks, CMRTYZ, Family Time, Floridas Dying, Goner, HoZac, Psychic Lunch, Vice, and others, the shop will occupy RARE from June 24 to July 24. The Beets and The Babies perform on opening night, Thursday, June 24.

Psychedelic Summer brings together artists from around the country who share a commitment to the resurgent lo-fi music scene.  Characterized by a strong DIY punk ethos, all of the work in this show maintains the grittiness and dreamy quality of the lo-fi music that inspires it.

    62

John Malta presents an installation entitled Moldy Oldies, a wildly colorful, yet dingy basement scene of monsters, video-game consoles, and artifacts of teenage angst constructed from found materials.

    65

Cassie Ramone's tabletop shrine to Pop Americana is an eerie tribute to life on the road, informed by years of touring around the country with her band Vivian Girls.  Also included in the show are a selection of Ramone's hand-drawn copies of the The Village Voice classified ads.

    66

As the official artist for The Beets, Matthew Volz creates a new tapestry as a backdrop for each of the band's shows.  Volz will debut two brand new works on fabric at Psychedelic Summer, and 50 of his customized t-shirts will be available in the record shop.

    63

C.M. Ruiz works with Xerox and pen, creating bold, abrasive, black & white collages in the tradition of the first punk zines and flyers.  In addition to producing original framed pieces for the exhibition, Ruiz constructed and designed the Psychedelic Summer record store installation with collaborator, co-curator, and CMRTYZ head honcho Ty Ziskis.

The artists participating in Psychedelic Summer will be featured in a limited edition newsprint zine designed by Ruiz.  Copies will be available at RARE and at Oak in Williamsburg and Manhattan.

  • LOVE ME, PLEASE SOMEBODY LOVE ME!

Our friend Sonja just passed along info on the newest offering from Poster Child Prints. New Love Me NYC prints by the main man Curtis Kulig. Every time I come to New York I see Curtis's stuff everywhere, he's cold crushing it.

Here's a little info on him.

Curtis Kulig decamped to New York where he splatters the words “LOVE ME” across the city's sprawl. Shouting from dripping red rooftop rollers to a uniform sticky message reigning over the cityscape... is his message an honest plea, or just a self-conscious hypocritical statement that is filled with self-doubt? Inverting the I heart NY slogan to the most basic of human desires, “LOVE ME” is becoming a New York icon by being virtually everywhere you turn; confronting onlookers with their most primitive human needs when they least expect it.

  • NAME TAGGING

We recently hosted the book release for Martha's Cooper's new book Name Tagging at our NY Pop-Up shop. We've collaborated with Martha a few times in the past and she is one of the nicest and realest people you'll ever meet. Having such a great portfolio of work is just the icing on the cake. Here's a video Hypebeast put together on the book and the event.

  • The Brothers T

Our good friends at 80's Purple thought it was a great idea to have Mike T. and Pubes in front of a camera to do what they're best at, talking over each other. Mike T, is our OBEY Mens Designer and Pubes... well, hes the "Jack of All Trades" at the office; in-house landscaper, box taper, and printer cartridge installer. If you don't know these two, they're quite inseparable, and I think it's safe to say that we love the both of them.

Didn't know what they said due to their heavy Jersey Accents? Me neither... But as long as I got your attention, 80's Purple is having a Sticker Pack Promo happening right now (while supplies last). Drop that purple lean and head on over to the shop. Tell em Furburger sent you... (click here)

Next Thursday, June 10th we're part of a new opening going on down at the Active Ride Shop in Santa Monica. Active has launched an initiative, called The Workshop, where they are dedicating a section of their store to feature product that benefits non-profit organizations. We were asked to participate because of our OBEY Awareness program and have a special buildout that will be unveiled next week at the opening along with Toms Shoes, Krocket Kids and Falling Whistles. We'd love to see you out for the opening so swing over HERE to RSVP (you must RSVP to get in). Hope to see you there.
