  • Mary Mary, Why you buggin?

Before we get to the classiest of classy old school punk rock fliers I want to let you know about a bit of a fundraiser our friends at Stones Throw have put together for the mother of the late, great J. DIlla. Dilla's mom has the same disease that claimed her son's life, lupus. To raise funds, Stones Throw and artist Parra have designed a T-shirt in which all profits will go directly to Maureen Yancey, Dilla's mom. Please visit Stones Throw's site to learn more about their efforts. Click HERE to learn more about it.

And now back to our regular program...

Awhile back I posted some of Mary's fliers she saved from the good ole days. So here's part two, more ripe classics!

I think Milo from the Descendents is living in Delaware now. I'm not even joking.

45 Grave! I still see Don Bolles rolling around the city. If you live in LA I think he's been doing a night over at the Hyperion.

  • Tail tap the high ramp!

I'm back so deal with it. But first deal with this...

That just happened! I asked Estrada to get on my shoulders and he claimed he was too old so I said why don't you get on my shoulders? Wasn't having that either so I had to settle for an Over the Top arm wrestling pose. Maybe it was the Knob Creek but I liked that guys attitude, nice dude. Stay tuned for my next post where I stroke my ego some more with epic album covers.

  • Unravelled Travel

oi baltazar! Being out for a minute in cold winter weather sure is bonita.

Orlando Venezuela is such a hoot! Despite the weird weather, weird mutants, and weird Thai food, this is by far the most enjoyable trip I've had in this weird state. The tiny creative bubble the Southeast had to offer helped us get thru it, so we thank you Tommy, Pete, Yves, and the rest of you. What a wonderful group of people!

We don't usually hang in FLA too often... We're here for the GUN Show, and a bit for this thing called Surf Expo. Yup! I was able to snap a few, in between interactive meetings and power point presentations...

A fun lil' ditty in Downtown Orlando, away from the new and empty... Thank you Covert, Beta, Tommy Mott and er'body for the good times!

Totally... didn't do it. I think they were 10.

So, whatevers and whateves.. We're now in Barcelona, which is aye-o-kye and outta your hair. Great to see some changes in this industry, hmmm... Either I have king sized cigarettes or a bad case of New Born Baby Hands Syndrome. I hope it ain't the latter! (side note: congrats to all those poppin' babies out a month prior, Viva Capricorns!)

Spanish cuizine, sorta tough to swallow, but delicious!

    The Spanish Burger... da woyks.

Fatty Pork Ribs, Modeled by the Pubers.

And Finally, the famoose... Pee-Poo delectable, a fine cataluña dessert..

    Guns!

May God bless the Awkward Juvenile Asian Jazz Bands in the world..

And of course, the Odd Bars...

Really not sure on what we'd get into for the next few weeks... Here for a few, and off to some other destination.. Hasta manzanas, naranjas, y bananas!

  • Happy MLK

Hello world there's a lot going on right now.  First off Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day!  MLK was an activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States and he is often seen as a human rights icon today.  It's been 40+ years since his "I Have a Dream" speech in which he spoke on a future where blacks and whites among others would coexist harmoniously as equals it's only until now that we are truly seeing his dream come true.  Tomorrow we shall induct America's first African-American President.  A day that will truly go down in the history book, and should not be missed.

Also, in honor of his historic induction into the Smithsonian Museum’s National Portrait Gallery on Saturday, today’s MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY homage comes from Shepard Fairey.

  • Martha Cooper show at Subliminal Projects

Today began set up for the Martha Cooper show at Subliminal Projects in Echo Park Los Angeles.  This show is being put on as part of a Spring/ Summer 09 collaboration between OBEY and Martha Cooper.  It was Martha's late 1970's photos of kids playing in the streets of New York that inspired part of the collection titled "Summer Madness".  Everything from cut off denim shorts and track shirt tank tops to old school painters caps.  We felt her photos captured a time that feels very similar to now.  Post war in the midst of an economic downturn, but still the youth had hope and were having fun with what little they had to work with.  History tends to repeat itself.

Anyway, here are some snippets of the show to come.  There will not only be photos for sale, but also a few key items from the OBEY x Martha Cooper collaboration. Hope to see you there!  Subliminal Projects is located at 1331 W. Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90026.

  • Daedelus & Colbert Repertoire!

    Howdy Folks!

Who told God to make Orlando FL 35ºF at nights while I'm out here? Hey, whoever it was, go fuck yourself, my suitcase is full of boardies, tank tops, and frip-frops. Ahh well... good thing I saw a Wal-Mart on my way to the motel, gonn get me a new get up. Sorry folks, I had to vent a bit.

So, anywesss... To all the couch potatoes out there, Shepard will be on the Colbert Report this Thursday at 11:30pm EST. For those that haven't seen the show, Steve Colbert is a funny douche that formats his talk show a lil different from the rest of the normal ones. I can't wait to see how he tears Shepard apart! All in good fun!

This FRIDAY, OBEY Radio is back with special guests Daedelus, Free The Robots, and Teebs! Daedelus, a forefather of L.A.'s experimental beat movement is finally in Santa Ana. Head out and prepare to be face fucked.

    Cleon's Art Show!

"I have always had a brutal sadistic perspective and for some reason my sense of humor usually ends up taking things to an uncomfortable place. I am always drawn to narratives that evoke a sinister or devious side of culture, the tragic movies where everyone dies or where the hero winds up ordinary. I think there is a truth everyone can relate to in feelings of struggle, desperation, pain and failure. The grey area between the dualistic nature of authority in our world is where these paintings live." - Cleon Peterson

Cleon Peterson is an LA based artist whose chaotic and violent paintings show clashing figures symbolizing a struggle between power and submission in the fluctuating architecture of contemporary society.

Cleon received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit, MI and a BFA in Graphic Design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Past exhibitions include: "Trailblazers", Boutwell Draper Gallery, Sydney, Australia, "Park Life", Subliminal Projects, Los Angeles, Art Basel 2007 and "Mail Order Monsters" at Deitch Projects New York, NY, "Those Damn Yanks", The Leonard Street Gallery, London, UK.

He has been featured in LA Record Magazine as well as Juxtapoz.

  • Friday Night - Street Shots

    Hi Friends!!

This Friday night there's going to be an amazing show at Shep's gallery Subliminal Projects, with the photography work of Martha Cooper.  She's a talented, sweet woman who's been taking photos for 50 years!  Our head designers Mike and Erin were very inspired by her photos of kids playing in the streets in the lower east side of New York back in the 70's.  A lot of inspiration from these photos and ended up as a collaboration with her for our Spring '09 season, which should hit your local retailer within the next couple of weeks.

Martha has documented not only this but her time in the Peace Corps in the 60's and the photos of these kids lead her to document freight train graffiti, and hip hop in the 70's and 80's in NYC.

She will have work from all different time periods - and she likes to keep her art accessible for young people so the prices are reasonable too.  Mrs. Coopers photography work will be on display from January 16th - February 13th, with the opening reception taking place this Friday.  SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS GALLERY 1331 W Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90026.  I hope to see you all Friday night!

  • Ding Dong!

    Herro, any body home?

I'm going to keep it short, because I know you guys have lots to do, getting back on the work horse, and planning for the next year to come. Around this time next year, you'll be wiser, a year older, and a hell-of-a-lot more annoying to all your friends and family. But what's not annoying is helping people out, and yesterday, lots of people came out to the Swindle office to check if they're Van Hoy's match for some bone marrow.

No blood, no urine, just a few oversized q-tips to swab the insides of your cheek.. it's that easy!

You also get a fun little packet and a donor card on your way out... even more fun!

In all seriousity, it was great to see everybody help out a comrade... Good One, LA!

And for the things you wanna do for the rest of the week!

Thursday @ Dance Right: Free Blood (DFA Records / Rong Music) All Live!!!

Friday @ OBEY Radio: Scotty Coats (Rong / DFA) and Ritesh (Jigsaw Records)

Saturday @ Apt 3: MFG x Skullphone x Berd Art Shizzz!
